AP 410: Teacher/ Assistant Principal/ Principal Job Expectations

Background

The Division believes that in order to have students learn and excel, the professional staff must be committed to working together to create a student-centered learning environment and to maintain the Division’s high standards. The Superintendent believes that Teachers, Assistant Principals and Principals play a critical role in student success, and must professionally and competently meet their respective Teaching Quality and Leadership Quality Standards in order to fulfill their role in education. As such, all professional staff employed by the Division must be of exemplary character, and possess the knowledge, skills and attributes necessary for each position or assignment.

Procedures

  1. The Teacher shall:
    1. Work in cooperation with the Principal and Assistant Principal (if applicable) to ensure students are provided with an education appropriate to their needs and abilities, and to ensure their safety, health and wellness.
    2. Work with the Principal and Assistant Principal (if applicable) toward achieving the  vision, mission, beliefs and priorities / goals of the Division and the School.
    3. Ensure that curriculum, planning, instruction, and assessment is consistent with the Alberta Program of Studies and the Alberta Guide to Education.
    4. Fulfill their specific teaching assignment / responsibilities as determined by the Principal of the school.
    5. Meet and adhere to the Teaching Quality Standard.
    6. Comply with all relevant legislation including Section 196 of the Education Act, Board Policies, Division Administrative Procedures, the ATA Professional Code of Conduct, and school-level policies and procedures including supervision and emergency procedures.
  2. The Assistant Principal shall:
    1. Assist the Principal in providing leadership that ensures students are provided with an education appropriate to their needs and abilities, and ensures their safety, health and wellness.
    2. Assist the Principal toward achieving the vision, mission, beliefs and priorities / goals of the Division and the School.
    3. Ensure that they meet and adhere to the Leadership Quality Standard.
    4. In conjunction with the Principal, develop and participate in an Assistant Principal Development Plan for two (2) or more years.
    5. Assist the Principal in promoting high student and staff morale, and opportunities for students and staff to excel.
    6. In general, assist with any of the duties as outlined for the role of the Principal, as determined by the Principal. 
    7. Fulfill their teaching assignment as may be determined by the Principal.
    8. Comply with all relevant legislation, Board Policies, Division Administrative Procedures, the ATA Professional Code of Conduct, and school-level policies and procedures including supervision and emergency procedures.
  3. The Principal shall:
    1. Provide instructional leadership and appropriate supervision at the school, and ensure the overall safety, health and wellness of students.
    2. Ensure that they competently fulfill their functions as outlined in Section 197 of the Education Act.
    3. Meet and adhere to the Leadership Quality Standard.
    4. Determine the teaching assignments / duties of school staff.
    5. Promote high student and staff morale, and opportunities for students and staff to excel.
    6. Evaluate the staff that they supervise as outlined in relevant Administrative Procedures and as per Division practices as may be established from time to time.
    7. Develop and support an Assistant Principal Development Plan, if applicable.
    8. Comply with all relevant legislation, Board Policies, Division Administrative Procedures, the ATA Professional Code of Conduct, and school-level policies and procedures including supervision and emergency procedures.
