May 2025 marks Speech & Hearing Month in Canada—a time to raise awareness about the importance of communication health and the professionals who support it. Strong communication skills are essential for learning, building relationships, and engaging in daily life, and this month serves as a reminder of how critical speech, language, and hearing are for overall success.
At Northern Lights Public Schools, we are proud to have a dedicated Speech and Language team that works tirelessly to support our students. Our team consists of one Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) and four Speech-Language Pathology Assistants (SLPAs), who provide essential services across the division.
What Does Our Speech & Language Team Do?
Our team works with students who experience challenges in areas such as:
- Speech sounds (pronunciation)
- Understanding and using language
- Social communication skills
- Stuttering and fluency
- Early literacy skills
By working directly with students, collaborating with teachers, and providing strategies to families, our SLP and SLPAs help ensure that all students have the tools they need to express themselves, understand others, and thrive in the classroom and beyond.
Why Is This Work Important?
Early identification and support for speech and language difficulties can make a lifelong difference for children. Our team provides assessments, interventions, and classroom strategies that help students become confident communicators. Without these supports, students may struggle academically, socially, and emotionally.
This Speech & Hearing Month, we celebrate the hard work of our Speech & Language team and recognize the vital role they play in student success. If you have concerns about your child’s speech or language development, don’t hesitate to reach out—we’re here to help!
