LTA student brings online community together

Students who are new to Learning Together Anywhere (LTA) School are often greeted with a big smile, wave, and warm hello from Grade 4 student Maddox Gelowitz.

“Maddox has an inquisitive and friendly demeanor that brings our community together in the online setting,” said teacher Jackie Routhier. “He welcomes new students with a smile, asks questions and makes them feel safe and included -  whether they are in Kindergarten or Grade 9.”

Maddox has been part of LTA since Kindergarten, and over the years, he has built strong connections with his classmates and teachers, both online and in person. He looks forward to meeting them on field trips, like their most recent visit to  Tim Hortons, where the students played games and celebrated Maddox’s birthday.

Learning online has given Maddox and his family the flexibility  to take school with them when travelling, explore his local community, and dive into project-based learning. One of his highlights was a monthly challenge that involved researching something he was curious about, figuring out how to make it himself, and then sharing his discoveries with his classmates. His backyard classroom is filled with artwork and hands-on projects he has created, reflecting his passion for learning.

“Maddox has a love for all things that involve learning,” said Routhier. “He leads by example in the areas of leadership and creating a positive school culture.”

A voracious reader, Maddox checks out 30 books from the library every month and eagerly reads them all. He also collecting Matchbox cars and building with Lego, sometimes incorporating what he learns in school into his creative play.

Maddox’s kindness, curiosity and leadership make him an integral part of the LTA community. His ability to make others feel welcome, his enthusiasm for learning, and his positive spirit inspire those around him. For these reasons, Maddox is the NLPS Student Shining Star for March. Each month during the 2024-2025 school year, NLPS recognizes students and staff who are making a difference in their schools and communities.
