Hello Wolf Pack!
With spring finally here, it’s hard not to have a Growth Mindset, and that’s what we’ve been focusing on in March at Ardmore School. The beautiful weather and getting back out in nature, boost mood and increase overall wellness.
The Grade 6/7s did a great job during the March assembly teaching the school about growth mindset through skits they wrote and acted out themselves. Having classes teach the rest of the school about the division’s monthly themes has been important in developing students’ leadership and public speaking skills.
One of Ardmore’s core values is Resilience. Research on resilience shows that people who display a growth mindset, understanding that they can learn and improve from mistakes, also develop more resilience. Mrs. Charles has been creating book walks this school year through our hallways. Mixing movement with literacy, the book walks have been a great opportunity for students to enhance their language skills while not having to sit at a desk and learn more about Ardmore’s 3 keywords- Respect, Responsibility and Resilience. The next book walk will showcase “Even Superheroes Have Bad Days”, a book about self-regulation, growth mindset, and resilience.
Here are several other great picture books about growth mindset and resilience:
The Garden In My Mind- Using a garden as a metaphor, the book explores how positive and negative choices affect us.
The Most Magnificent Thing- An inventor learns the importance of not giving up.
Giraffes Can’t Dance- Gerald the Giraffe teaches readers that it’s ok to be different and the importance of believing in yourself.
The Magical Yet- The perfect book for any child who is frustrated by what they can’t do… Yet!
Rosie Revere, Engineer- A book that teaches that every failure has learning opportunities. Rosie now appears in the animated Netflix series “Ada Twist, Scientist”.
The Girl Who Never Made Mistakes- Beatrice, the perfectionist, learns that we all make mistakes.
These books are either available in the school library, or Mrs. Webb owns a copy. Feel free to reach out if you’d like to borrow one.
One of the best ways to teach a growth mindset is to learn about successful people and their failures. Learning that failure is normal and expected in life can be inspiring.
