Custodian champions breakfast program at Ardmore School

Each morning, Ardmore School students arrive at a clean, welcoming school—and they’re greeted with nutritious breakfast options thanks to the commitment of Head Custodian Laura Bennett.

“For the last two years, Laura has selflessly volunteered to run our Breakfast Club program,” shared Ardmore School Principal Marjorie Charles. “Her dedication has had a profound impact on both students and parents, who deeply appreciate her commitment to their well-being.”

When she is not fulfilling her custodial duties, Bennett is busy sourcing, purchasing and delivering food for the breakfast program. She frequently arrives with a trunk full of nutritious and go items like granola bars, fruit, cereal and applesauce. At least once a week, she offers a special hot meal, like waffles, to make students’ mornings even brighter.

“Kids are always hungry. I wanted to be that little bit of help that ensures they have something to eat in the morning after they get to school,” Bennett said.

Beyond managing the breakfast program, Bennett contributes in many other ways at Ardmore School. She is an active member of the school’s parent council, and regularly donates her time to organize and support student fundraising efforts.

“She manages the logistics for these initiatives to help ensure they’re successful,” explained Charles. “Thanks to Laura’s hard work, our students have been able to access unique and enriching opportunities.”

Her efforts have supported events like family movie nights, school dances, and fundraisers for activities such as ski trips and last year’s student trip to Ottawa. This year, she’s already assisting with the Grade 8 farewell and “anything else that needs help.”

“If I can contribute and make things easier, that’s what I want to do,” she said.

One of Bennett’s favorite memories of volunteering at the school was helping as a parent volunteer during Trickster Theatre’s weeklong residency. She assisted with props and setup, saying, “That was a lot of fun. But I really enjoy it all. I just love helping the kids.”

Laura Bennett is the Northern Lights Public Schools Staff Shining Star for November. Each month during the 2024-2025 school year, NLPS is featuring different Shining Stars and celebrating their meaningful contributions to students.
