Hello Dragons!
With spring finally here, it’s hard not to have a Growth Mindset, and that’s what we’ve been focusing on in March at Iron River School. The beautiful weather and getting back out in nature boost mood and increase overall wellness. From quotes on the morning announcements to bulletin boards to classroom activities, students have been learning the importance of a Growth Mindset- the belief that your talents can improve through hard work, using strategies, and getting help from others.
“The Magical Yet” is the perfect book for anyone who is frustrated by what they can’t do… Yet. Iron River students loved the whimsical pictures and sing-songy rhyme. The book had them wishing they had a little fairy helping them achieve their goals, and students had the opportunity to create their own and discuss skills they wanted to learn- like riding a bike without training wheels, snowboarding, and doing backflips.
Here are several other great picture books about growth mindset:
Ish by Peter H. Reynolds- Explores topics of perfectionism, creativity, and ignoring criticism, through a little boy who loves to draw.
The Most Magnificent Thing by Ashley Spires- An inventor learns the importance of not giving up.
Giraffes Can’t Dance by Giles Andreae- Gerald the Giraffe teaches readers that it’s ok to be different and the importance of believing in yourself.
The Girl Who Never Made Mistakes by Gary Rubinstein- Beatrice, the perfectionist, learns that we all make mistakes.
These books are either available in the school library, or Mrs. Webb owns a copy. Feel free to reach out if you’d like to borrow one.
One of the best ways to teach a growth mindset is to learn about successful people and their failures. Learning that failure is normal and expected in life can be inspiring. Here are 16 celebrities who had to overcome big obstacles: https://www.rd.com/list/ironic-failures-of-wildly-successful-people/
